Histochemical Study on the Effect of Estrogen in the Gingiva of Albino Rats

Abstract
Histochemical experiments on the effect of estrogen in the gingiva were carried out on 25 female albino rats.
The average weight of the. rats was 100gm. The experimental group were consisted of. 20 albino rats which received weekly subcutaneous injection of estrodiol benzoate (1.0mg), and were sacrificed at 1. 5. 7 and 10 weeks.
The specimens was removed from lower first molar of buccal side region.
Histochemical staining methods used was demonstated by means of SH and SS base stain method(Pearse), periodic acid-Schiff¢¥s reaction with amylase digestion method (Lillies) and methyl green pyronin stain (Unna-Pappenheim).
The results obtained were summarized as follows;
In the Experimental groups which received 7 and 10 weeks, the characteristics of SH base stainability of gingival epithelium were in creasen the stratum granulosum while SS base were a strong reaction in the stratum cornenum. PAS stainability was decreased in all experimental groups.
There was no significant difference in gingival epithelium but glycogen was slightly increase, and methyl green-pyronin positive substance was weekly decrease.
